Mandriva 2009 RC1 on Acer Aspire One: Follow-Up
OK my experiment with Mandriva 2009 on my AAO didn’t go as well as the initial results indicated. Sure it looked fantastic and found all of my hardware. I could not have been more impressed….until it quit working.
First it was little stuff like the the track pad not working quite right. Then it was the inability to get my Ethernet card working. it did work, then it didn’t. Next it was the wireless card disappearing. No big deal right? Sure I couldn’t get on my home network or surf while I was out, but hey who needs wireless. Snerk. Needless to say I put the Acer Linpus OS back on there and suddenly it all worked again.
I’ll be curious to see how 2009 shapes up when it goes gold. It really had all the makings of a great OS for the AAO, but of course only it works. Which it didn’t. Oh well, that’s the fun of experimenting.

It’s very strange. Did you removed some packages or proceed to packages updates ?
It’s also very strange that your ethernet card is not working. Please give following commands output :
lspcidrake
cat /etc/modprobe.conf
cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-*

Actually I didn’t do anything - I didn’t even run an update. I shut it down that night and brought it up the next morning. I’m going to try again and I will let you know what happens.

Did you try installing Mandriva 2008?

I tried booting the older Mandriver 2008 from the live CD using a CD ROM drive connected to the USB port on the AAO.
About half way through, the install just hangs.
This is a shame as I have used the same method to install Mandriva 2008 on the eeepc without issue.
I’m going to wait until the offical release of 2009 as the posts suggest its still a bit buggy.
I still think 2008 is the best distro I have used, the Control Centre is still Mandrivas biggest assset. It is one of the main reasons I use Mandriva instaed of a GNOME based distro.

What about Mandriva MINI??? They claim that’s the special version for NETBooks. I never tried it, but you should.

I don’t think Mandriva MINI is a real, downloadable product yet… It’s more like a service that Mandriva offers to Netbook manufacturers who are still looking for an OS to put onto their stuff.
Anyway, I hope I’m wrong, ’cause I’m dying to try give Mandriva MINI a spin on my EEE 900!

Folks,
This may not be a Mandriva issue. Other people have reported similar problems which they fixed with a bios upgrade… on the other hand, someone fixed this within the supplied Linpus by typing:
mv ~/.gconf/system/networking ~/
